OverviewSmartView is a web application (only for IE 5.5 or higher) that provides access to information and settings on your networked Wintriss SmartPAC 2 controls. SmartView also allows you to send a brief (150 character) message that will appear on the screen of the SmartPAC 2. SmartView's main page shows the status of the entire pressroom. For each press, the SmartView main page shows:
From the SmartView main page, you can access a detail page for each press. In addition to the information listed above, each press's detail page shows:
At the bottom of the detail page, there's a form field where you can create a short text message that will be sent to the SmartPAC 2 and displayed on the screen. The operator clears the message at the SmartPAC2. The Detail page has links that allow you to view the SmartPAC 2's Error Log and Installed Options. The Error Log is a time and date-stamped list of the last 100 error and events that occurred at the SmartPAC 2. The Installed Options is a table that list all of the options installed in the SmartPAC 2 along with the firmware and software versions. SmartView captures a "snapshot" of the pressroom. The information can be refreshed manually by clicking on the "Refresh" button near the top right corner of the Main Page, or SmartView can be set to automatically refresh the information every 30 seconds to 15 minutes by selecting a Refresh Rate from the pull down menu next to the Refresh button. Getting Started
What you'll need To enable SmartView at the SmartPAC 2, select "SETUP NETWORK" from the the Initialization menu. Use the cursor keys to select "SMARTVIEW FUNCTION" and press the enter key to enable it. The selection toggles between "Enabled" and "Disabled" when the enter key is pressed. To get a SmartPAC 2's network name, go to the "Setup Network" selection in the SmartPAC 2's initialization mode. In addition to the network name, the screen will show a numerical network address called the "IP address". In some network installations, the SmartPAC 2's will be setup with fixed IP addresses (this is according to customer preference - you should check with your network administrator to determine if the SmartPAC 2's in your plant use fixed IP addresses or DHCP). If the SmartPAC 2 uses a fixed IP address, you should enter the IP address in the "Network Name" field on the SmartView Setup page. If not, you must enter the network name. Once you know the network names, you can browse your network to verify that each SmartPAC 2 is accessible. Note that you will not be able to get in to any directories on a SmartPAC 2 as these are password protected; just the fact that you can see a control on the network verifies that it is connected. On more complex networks, it can sometimes be difficult to browse to a particular system through the maze of domains and workgroups. An alternate way to determine if your SmartPAC 2 controls are accessible is to use the Ping Utility on the SmartView Setup page. Click on the Ping Utility link on the setup page. If this is your first time using the ping utility, you may be prompted to download a ping utility ActiveX control (see below). Click "Yes" to download.
To use the ping utility, simply enter a SmartPAC 2's network name into the "Net Name or IP Addr:" field and click the "Ping" button. If the SmartPAC 2 is available on the network, it will come back with a response showing the network name, IP address, and response time.
If the SmartPAC 2 cannot be found, the ping utility will come back with the network name and
If you get an error message when you try to run the ping utility, your computer was probably unable to download the Ping Utility ActiveX control (some firewalls prevent access to these files). SmartPAC2.com needs to be set up as a "trusted" website. Notify your network administrator. First time setup You should use the same press name that was programmed into the SmartPAC 2 under the "Press Name" selection in the SmartPAC 2's initialization menu. Note that the press name entered at the SmartPAC 2 is the one that will show up in SmartView when the press is online. The Press Name that you enter in SmartView Setup will only appear when the press is not online.
To change a network or press name, click on the name in the list box to highlight it and press the "Edit" button. The network and press names will move back up to the form fields so that you can edit them. When you are done, press "Add". To completely remove a press from SmartView, click on the name in the list box to highlight it and press the "Delete" button. You must also enter your name in the box marked "User Name". This user name will appear next to the "From" field in any text messages that you send to the press. When you are finished entering the press and user name information, click the "Submit" button. The first time you click the submit button, you may be prompted to download a signed ActiveX control called "Mabry WinSock ActiveX Control and COM Object" (see below).
ActiveX Control Download Prompt Click "Yes" to download. This utility is needed to allow the SmartPAC 2 controls to communicate with your web browser. If you choose not to download this control, SmartView will not work. You only need to perform the setup the first time you use SmartView. After that, a "cookie" containing the setup information is stored on your machine. You will have to redo the setup if you delete this cookie. Cookies are sometimes deleted when you clear the Temporary Internet Files. Ignoring Presses
During SmartView's refresh cycle, it polls each SmartPAC 2 for the latest information. If a press is offline, SmartView tries several times to get the data before it "gives up". Therefore, it takes much longer for SmartView to poll an offline press than it does for one that is online. The problem intensifies when there are a large number of presses offline at the same time. To minimize the polling time, you have the option to check an "Ignore" box for any offline press. If you know that a press is not scheduled to run, or if a press is offline for an extended period of time due to maintenance or other reasons, you should check that press's ignore box. SmartView will then bypass the press during its polling cycle and more quickly retrieve new data for the running presses. When a press's Ignore box is checked, SmartView will not poll that press again until you either uncheck the box or restart SmartView. Email Setup
The SmartPAC 2 "Messaging" feature allows the press operator to use SmartPAC 2 to send pre-formatted text messages to any email address including text-ready pagers, cell phones, and PDAs. In addition, the Messaging feature allows you to send important information from the SmartPAC 2 such as the error log and installed options to the Wintriss Tech support group. You must first establish communications with each SmartPAC 2 before you can start setting up the messaging feature. See the Getting Started section of this page for instructions on setting up SmartView. To use the Messaging feature, you must create a list of recipients and messages that will appear on the screen of each SmartPAC 2. When a SmartPAC 2 leaves the factory, it has one recipient - Wintriss Tech Support - hard-coded into its memory. There are two messages - "Last Error Message" and "Error Log Files" also hard-coded into memory. In addition to these, you may add as many recipients and pre-formatted messages as you like by following these instructions: Adding recipients
Adding Messages
When you are finished entering recipients and messages, click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. If you do not click the save button before you leave this page, the information you entered will be lost.
Setting Up Multiple Systems Troubleshooting
If you are having trouble getting SmartView to work, first verify that you are running Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher. SmartView will not run on any other browser, or any earlier version of IE. Next, verify that your browser's security settings are compatible with SmartView. If the security settings match SmartView's requirements, you should verify that the required ActiveX control downloaded to your computer.
The first time that you click the "Submit" button on the SmartView Setup Page, we attempt to download a signed ActiveX control
containing a communications utility called Mabry Internet Socket/X ActiveX control".
This control enables SmartView to communicate with the SmartPAC 2's on your network. To verify that
this control downloaded, look in the "Downloaded Program Files" directory for "Mabry Internet Socket/X ActiveX control".
The path to the Downloaded Program Files directory is usually NOTE: You must have administrator privileges to install the Mabry Internet Socket/X ActiveX control. If the Mabry ActiveX control is not in the Downloaded Programs directory, contact your network administrator. Many firewall programs filter out all ActiveX controls. You may have to either manually download the program, or have SmartPAC2.com listed as a "trusted" site. If your security settings are set to prompt you before downloading an ActiveX control, ensure that any pop-up blockers are turned off. Some pop-up blockers can prevent the download prompt message from appearing. If SmartView had been running normally, and you are unexpectedly required to re-enter the setup information, you have probably deleted the "cookie" containing SmartView's setup information. This cookie is stored in your Temporary Internet Files Directory. Simply rerun SmartView Setup to create a new cookie. If a press is showing up as offline, check the following:
Security Settings
The diagram below shows the security settings that need to be in place for SmartView to run. |
||
The diagram does not show all of the security settings, it shows only the ones that affect SmartView. If your security settings match those in the diagram, and SmartView still does not run, refer to the Troubleshooting section of this page for more information.
The "Download signed ActiveX controls" is shown with "Enabled" selected. You may instead set this to "Prompt",
however you must be sure to click "Yes" when the download window appears the first time you run SmartView.

Firewall Settings for Windows XP Service Pack 2
The default firewall settings for Windows XP Service Pack 2 can interfere with SmartView's ability to communicate with the SmartPAC 2's on the network. A port must be added to the firewall's "exceptions" list to enable SmartView communications:
SmartView can now communicate with the SmartPAC 2's on the network. |
